
I’d never thought of trying hypnotherapy
for dealing with my fear of heights.
I’ve been scared of heights for as long as I can remember. My Mum tells a story about going to buy school shoes at Clarks. The older styles were up these wide, open stairs and when she tried to get me to go up them, I just screamed and screamed because I was scared I would fall through the open treads.
It was so embarrassing for her, everyone staring at me. We ended up going home and I didn’t get the new school shoes I needed.
Over the years I’ve tried to challenge myself to ‘get over it’ by going on rollercoasters and up tall buildings. The worst time was when I decided I was going to climb the open steps of the Eiffel Tower. I’m sure you’ve seen pictures of the open sides, where the wind blows through, and you can look right to the ground.
I got maybe ten steps up from the pay booth and had to go back. I just couldn’t do it. I was so disappointed in myself. I couldn’t even get higher than the first step of my set of kitchen steps, you know the ones, for reaching into the highest cupboards. They just wobbled so much. And climbing a step ladder was out of the question. I had to ask friends to change light bulbs or go in the loft for me.
When I started training to be a cognitive behavioural hypnotherapist, I had to practice using my own problems, including my fear of heights. The relaxation techniques I learned, combined with breaking the problem down into a series of small steps and visualising successfully completing each one, were so easy to follow and there was no pressure to do more than I felt I could. Every small step was progress, a win for me that really worked. I can climb ladders now which is great when it comes to decorating or changing those pesky light bulbs. Most of all, I really want to tackle the Eiffel Tower again.
